Under-covered Detective and Criminal Intelligence Police is an indispensable part of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. It plays the pivotal role in detecting and preventing crimes. Joint Police Commissioner Detective and Criminal Intelligence Branch is the chief of this unit. The unit is divided into three divisions, south, north, and criminal intelligence & prosecution, each headed by a Deputy Police Commissioner.
The principal tasks of the Detective & Criminal Intelligence Branch are:
Investigating & detecting crimes, like murder, sensitive murder, gruesome murder, rape, rape with murder, dacoity, robbery, vehicle-theft etc.
To recover illegal arms & ammunitions and illegal drugs.
To arrest criminals, wanted listed criminals, shooters & top terrors.
Preventing patrolling.
Collection of advance criminal intelligence and movement of criminals, suspects & strangers.
To build up crime statistics, criminal records, criminal profiles with photos, mode of operation of crimes.
To serve as Public Relation office of crimes.
To act as prosecutor on the State side to ensure the trial & conviction of the criminals.
Detective & Criminal Intelligence Branch has one modern Bomb Disposal Team and one Crime Scene Investigation Team. It also has one Crime Response Team to response to the crime scene within shortest possible time.
Detective & Criminal Intelligence Branch has six teams, each led by a Senior Assistant Police Commissioner/ Assistant Police Commissioner. It also has some specialized teams, like Cobra & Chita to combat crimes. Around 33 anti-crime plain cloth team are patrolling the whole city with a view to prevent crimes.
